Welcome to The Art & Science of Coffee
I’ve been a fan of coffee since I was old enough to drink it. When I started, “coffee” just meant the instant, freeze-dried variety to me–I had no idea there was more to it. A few years later, I discovered how bad instant really was when I started drinking espresso-based drinks and French press coffee.
Then, at the start of 2006, we moved into a house that had a high-end espresso machine built into the kitchen wall. I can’t remember the model or make, but it was more expensive than any I’ve owned since! At first I tried to figure it out on my own, creating some terrible drinks that, at the time, I thought were great. That was the when I fell in love with making coffee, not just consuming it.
Over the past few years I’ve spent far too many hours reading about and experimenting with brewing techniques, and I’ve written about coffee as part of my work as a freelance writer on a few occasions (here’s one from 2008), though I’ve never written about it extensively. This site is where I’ll document what I know about coffee and post updates about what I’ve learned, tasted or bought in the coffee world recently. I hope you enjoy the site and learn something about coffee! If you’re a fellow coffee buff or even a barista and find something on this site that’s inaccurate, please get in touch to let me know.
